Free credit freezes available for consumers
September 26, 2018|Posted in: Finances
A new federal law allows consumers to freeze and unfreeze their credit files for free. Freezing your credit restricts access to your credit file, making it more difficult for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name. The credit freeze is also available for children under 16.
If you request a credit freeze online or by phone, the agency must place the freeze within one business day. When you request to lift the freeze, it will be done within an hour.
When you contact the credit bureaus to freeze your credit, you can also opt out of pre-screened credit offers.
