On 6 June 2018, The Secretary of the Army signed Army Directive 2018-09 (Army Tuition Assistance Policy) with an effective implementation date of 5 August 2018. This directive eliminates the one-year or ten-year wait to use Federal Tuition Assistance and applies to all Soldiers, regardless of component. Service members are exempt from paying interest for up to 60 months on certain student loans while serving in an area that qualifies them for special pay. Service members and veterans may receive a refund if they overpaid interest during previous periods of qualifying service. Personal Financial Counseling is available to help Service Members and their Families manage finances, resolve financial problems, and reach long-term goals such as getting an education, buying a home, and planning for retirement.
